Best Public Schools Near Savannah, GA: A Guide for Families Moving From Out of State

If you are thinking about moving to Savannah, Georgia with kids, there is a good chance schools are going to play a major role in where you decide to buy a home.

This is especially true if you are moving from another state.

I am Luis Bruno, a Realtor in the Savannah, Georgia area, and I specialize in helping people relocate to Savannah and the surrounding communities. I have helped hundreds of families through the home-buying and relocation process, and one of the most common questions I get is:

“Where are the best public schools around Savannah, Georgia?”

The answer is a little more complicated than simply naming one school.

Savannah is surrounded by several different counties and school districts. A home that is only 20 or 30 minutes away could put your child in a completely different school system.

Based on current school performance, GreatSchools ratings, district data, and what out-of-state buyers should understand before choosing an area, here are the Savannah-area school systems I would research first.

1. Richmond Hill and Bryan County Schools

If public schools are one of your biggest priorities when moving to the Savannah area, Richmond Hill, Georgia should probably be one of the first places you research.

Richmond Hill is located in Bryan County, roughly south of Savannah, and it has developed a strong reputation with relocating families.

This reputation is backed by current academic data.

Bryan County Schools reported that the district ranked 7th out of 180 school systems in Georgia based on its 2025 College and Career Ready Performance Index, or CCRPI. That places the district within approximately the top 3% of school systems in Georgia.

The district also reports a 94.6% four-year graduation rate and more than 10,800 students enrolled.

For someone moving from another state, that makes Richmond Hill one of the easier Savannah-area communities to put on your initial search list.

Public schools serving the Richmond Hill area include:

• Richmond Hill Primary School
• Richmond Hill Elementary School
• Carver Elementary School
• Frances Meeks Elementary School
• McAllister Elementary School
• Richmond Hill Middle School
• Richmond Hill High School

Bryan County Schools separates the county into North Bryan and South Bryan, with Richmond Hill making up the South Bryan side of the district.

Richmond Hill High School also has a large Advanced Placement program. In 2026, the school reported that 505 students took 997 AP exams, with 201 students earning the highest possible score of 5 on at least one exam.

Why Richmond Hill gets so much attention

The schools are only part of the reason.

Richmond Hill also gives buyers access to newer neighborhoods, a suburban setting, parks, shopping, and relatively easy access to Savannah.

For a family relocating to the Savannah area that tells me, “schools are one of our top priorities,” Richmond Hill is normally going to be one of the areas worth researching very closely.

That does not mean every house in Richmond Hill will automatically be assigned to the school you want. Bryan County maintains specific attendance zones, and those zones should always be checked using the exact property address before purchasing a home.

2. South Effingham County

The next area I would look at is South Effingham County, particularly parts of Guyton and Rincon.

Technically, there is no separate “South Effingham School District.” These schools are part of the Effingham County School District.

However, the South Effingham feeder pattern stands out within the district.

According to GreatSchools data compiled in my Greater Savannah School Guide, the South Effingham path currently includes:

• South Effingham Elementary School: 8/10
• South Effingham Middle School: 9/10
• South Effingham High School: 7/10

That gives South Effingham one of the strongest complete elementary-to-high-school feeder paths in the Savannah metro area.

South Effingham also has another major advantage for people relocating here.

It is on the southern side of Effingham County, making it closer to Pooler and Savannah than many of the communities farther north in the county. It is also an area where a large amount of new construction is taking place.

This combination makes South Effingham especially attractive to buyers who want:

• Strong public school options
• New construction homes
• More house and land for their money
• A suburban or quieter setting
• Reasonable access to Pooler and Savannah

Effingham County Schools Are Strong Overall

Even outside of the South Effingham feeder pattern, Effingham County performs consistently well.

My school research found that 12 of the district’s 13 schools were rated 6/10 or higher, with three schools reaching a 9/10 rating.

Some of the highest-rated public schools in Effingham County include:

There is one important lesson here for out-of-state buyers.

Do not judge an area only by the elementary school.

For example, Blandford Elementary currently has a 9/10 GreatSchools rating, but the feeder path can eventually lead into a middle school with a lower rating. If you are buying a house and plan to stay there for many years, you should research the entire elementary, middle, and high school path.

3. Chatham County and Savannah

Chatham County is much harder to summarize.

This is the school district that covers Savannah, Pooler, Garden City, Port Wentworth, and Tybee Island.

The district has some of the highest-rated individual public schools in the entire Savannah area, but it also has a much wider range of school performance than Bryan or Effingham County.

That is why the exact address becomes very important.

For example, Chatham County currently has schools such as:

• Savannah Arts Academy — GreatSchools Rating: 10/10
• Savannah Early College High School — GreatSchools Rating: 9/10
• Georgetown School — GreatSchools Rating: 8/10
• Esther F. Garrison School of Visual and Performing Arts — GreatSchools Rating: 8/10
• Tybee Island Maritime Academy — GreatSchools Rating: 8/10

However, there is a major catch.

Many of Chatham County’s highest-rated schools are magnet, charter, choice, or application-based schools.

Living close to one of these schools does not necessarily mean your child can attend it.

In fact, eight of the top ten Chatham County schools in my research were magnet, choice, or charter programs that may require an application, lottery, or audition.

That is extremely important if you are moving from another state and searching for homes online.

You do not want to buy a house assuming your child will attend an 8/10 or 10/10 school simply because that school appears nearby on a map.

What about traditional zoned schools in Chatham County?

One area worth researching is the Islands and Whitemarsh Island area.

Islands High School is currently rated 7/10 and is the highest-rated traditional zoned high school listed in my Chatham County research. Marshpoint Elementary, also rated 7/10, serves the same general area.

For buyers who want to remain inside Chatham County while putting more weight on public schools, this is one area worth studying.

4. Liberty County and Hinesville

Liberty County includes Hinesville and Midway and is strongly connected to Fort Stewart.

It can make a lot of sense for military families because of its location and generally lower home prices.

However, if your number-one priority is public school ratings, the current numbers are generally weaker than Bryan County, Effingham County, and some parts of Chatham County.

The biggest standout is:

After Taylors Creek, the ratings drop considerably across much of the district.

That does not mean someone should automatically rule out Hinesville.

If you work at Fort Stewart, home price and commute may matter just as much as the school rating. Every family’s priorities are different.

So, Where Are the Best Public Schools Near Savannah, Georgia?

If I were helping an out-of-state buyer start their research and public schools were one of their biggest priorities, I would organize the search roughly like this:

Richmond Hill and Bryan County
This is the strongest overall district to research first based on current statewide performance. Bryan County is currently reporting performance within the top 3% of Georgia school districts.

South Effingham
One of the strongest elementary-to-high-school feeder paths around Savannah, with South Effingham Elementary rated 8/10, South Effingham Middle 9/10, and South Effingham High 7/10 in the GreatSchools data used for this guide.

Other parts of Effingham County
Rincon, Guyton, and Springfield offer several highly rated schools, but make sure you check the complete feeder path.

Chatham County
There are excellent individual schools, including some of the highest-rated schools in the region, but many require applications or admission. The specific home address matters much more.

Liberty County
Worth considering especially for Fort Stewart families and buyers focused on affordability, but school ratings are less consistent overall.

A School Rating Is Not the Same as a School Zone

This may be the most important part of this entire article.

Never buy a home based only on the school that appears closest to it on Zillow, Google Maps, GreatSchools, or a builder’s website.

A school rating and an attendance zone are two completely different things.

School boundaries can also change, especially in fast-growing areas with large amounts of new construction.

When I work with a relocation buyer, I recommend looking at three things:

• The elementary school assigned to the address
• The middle school assigned to the address
• The high school assigned to the address

Then look at the entire path together.

GreatSchools ratings can also change as new test results are released, so they should be treated as a current research tool rather than a guarantee of future school performance.
